Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
